IN CELEBRATION OF THEIR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AND NATIONAL GARDEN WEEK, ONE OF CONNECTICUT’S LARGEST PRIVATE ROSE GARDENS WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC IN JUNE
A Trumbull couple will share the beauty of their award winning gardens with the public the weekends of June 9 and 10 and 16 and 17. Spinning Wheel Gardens, located at 59 Spinning Wheel Road, the home of Nancy and Alton Lenoce will be open to the public Saturdays and Sundays, free of charge, between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm.
Consisting of one of the largest private rose collections in the state, their award winning gardens also include hundreds of perennials, annuals and specimen evergreen shrubs. Incorporating the European design element of garden rooms, many pieces of statuary, fountains and structures are blended into the landscape. Noteworthy is the man made 2,200 gallon water garden with its own 14 foot bridge and 30 foot stream.
The Lenoce gardens have been featured in numerous publications and are a “must see” by professional and amateur gardeners and are sought out by landscape designers, photographers, artists and future brides. The gardens have been designated by the National Wildlife Federation as a wildlife habitat.
According to the publisher of the Connecticut Gardener magazine, “It’s a wonderful example of how a homeowner, who does all the work himself, can transform a backyard into a showplace. It was an inspiration to me and I know it will inspire others who visit.”
Upon entering the moon-gated courtyard, visitors are awed by the kaleidoscope of colors and fragrances produced by thousands of blossoms. Previous visitors described the gardens a “a little bit of heaven”, “I didn’t want to leave”, “Trumbull’s version of the Botanical Gardens.” Park benches encourage people to stay and not only enjoy the plant life, but also the many varieties of birds and fish that also call the gardens their home.
The Lenoce’s have opened their gardens, free, for several years. This year the Lenoces are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary and will be welcoming all new and old gardening friends to enjoy the beauty of the roses and friendships made over many years of sharing this gift with others.
Nancy is a member of the Connecticut Federated Garden Clubs Board, Gardening Consultants Council, Landscape Council and the Long Hill Garden Club. Alton, a retired radio station owner, is a consulting rosarian with the American Rose Society and member of the CT Rose Society
