The Long Hill Garden Club of Trumbull, Connecticut

Awards 2003

Ruth Mohr, Terry Stoleson, Nancy Lenoce, and Meg Bremer, President of The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. in 2003.

Landscape Design Award of Excellence: Ruth Mohr, educator
Under the direction of Ruth Mohr, students created butterfly gardens at Middlebrook Elementary School in Trumbull. Students helped in the selection, planting and seeding of the gardens, gather and raise the eggs and caterpillars and tag and release Monarch Butterflies. Since then, Ruth has been instrumental in setting up 4 additional butterfly gardens at the four other Trumbull Elementary Schools. The butterfly gardens successfully contribute to the children, the neighborhood and the town and inspire neighbors and other schools to create their own gardens.

Nell McGuinness Memorial Award: Terry Stoleson
A travelling silver tray, established in 2001, by the Guilford Garden Club in recognition of Nell McGuinness love of floral design. It is to be presented to a club or member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. for the most outstanding floral design at the Federated Garden club flower Show held at the Ct Flower and Garden Show.
Terry’s Design “Hawaii” won Best in show in 2003 at the Ct Flower and Garden Show.

Ellen Carder Memorial Award: Nancy Lenoce
This award was established in 1971 in memory of Mrs. Carder and her life long interest in horticulture. This award is an appropriate book for the recipient.
For several years, a Long Hill Garden Club member has been diligently working in transforming her backyard into a showplace featuring roses. This year, in celebrating the Year of the Rose, and National Garden Week, Nancy Lenoce and her husband, Al, opened their private gardens to CT Garden Clubs to the joy and enthusiasm of all. Several rehab groups brought their clients to view the gardens. The publicity brought hundreds of people to view the garden from all the neighboring towns.
